Is breast cancer preventable?

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women which is not entirely preventable in its development. Why some women develop breast cancer is not yet fully understood. However, there are certain factors which increase or decrease the risk of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise and abstaining from alcohol and smoking are factors which reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. They do not, however, constitute a guarantee not to contract the disease. Smokers, those who are obese, or couch potatoes are among those with negative factors.

What happens during a biopsy?

If a suspicious node is discovered in the breast it will be clarified in a biopsy. Under anesthetic, a tissue sample will be removed from the breast using a fine needle. This examination lasts around 30 minutes and is not dangerous. The tissue will then be histologically examined. If the node is benign, an operation is usually not necessary. However a malignant tumor requires further therapeutic measures, and in most cases, surgery.

As long as complementary forms of medicine are used to support classical breast cancer treatment and to improve quality of life, they make sense. They are however, in no way an alternative to standard therapy for tumor diseases. Craniosacral Therapy, Music Therapy and so forth are seen as pleasant and can increase well being and the immune system. Mistletoe preparations, vitamins, antioxidants as well as homeopathic medicines can be taken in addition to conventional medicine.
